Using the story "All Summer in a Day," create an argument by filling in the boxes below. Choose one of these topics or make up your own:
Write your main idea about the topic you chose.
Example: The other kids were not fair to Margot.
Find two quotes from the story that support your claim. Copy the exact words and put them in quotation marks.
Example: 1. "They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door." 2. "She was a very frail girl who looked as if she had been lost in the rain for years and the rain had washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth and the yellow from her hair."
Explain how your evidence proves your claim. Connect your quotes to your main idea.
Example: The first quote shows that the kids were mean to Margot by locking her in a closet. This wasn't fair because Margot didn't do anything wrong. The second quote tells us that Margot was already sad and lonely. The other kids made it worse by being unkind to her instead of helping her feel better.
Remember to use specific parts of the story in your argument. Think about why the characters act the way they do, where the story takes place, and what the story is trying to teach us.
